How to Set up Triggers
Types of Triggers
Abandoned Browse
This message is triggered when someone navigates to a product page and does not proceed to add a product to their cart. After a configurable time delay ( i.e., 20 mins, 45 mins, etc), a customized message will be sent that includes a direct link to the product page, and can include an image of the product.
Example Messages:
“We noticed you checking out some favorites… ready to make them yours? 💖 Shop now: [link]”
“Love at first sight? 😏 Your [product name] is just a click away: [link]”
Abandoned Cart
This message is triggered when someone adds items to their cart and does not proceed to checkout within a certain time frame (based on the timing you configure in your settings (i.e., 30 minutes, 1 hour, etc). You can customize the message and include a direct link back to the customer's cart, as well as an image of the last product they placed into their cart.
Example Messages:
“You left items in your cart. Complete your purchase here: [link]”
“Psst… your cart misses you 👀 Check out now before someone else snags your faves! 👉 [link]”
Abandoned Checkout
This message is triggered when someone proceeds to checkout but does not complete their purchase within a certain time frame (based on the timing you configure in your settings). You can customize the message and include a direct link back to the customer's cart. You can even include a special discount code to help close the sale.
Example Messages:
“Forgot something? Complete your checkout now and enjoy 10% off with code SAVE10 ✨ [link]”
“Hey! Looks like you left something in checkout. Need help finishing up? Complete your order here: [link]”
Price Drop
Send a message when a product a subscriber has shown interest in goes on sale.
You can now choose the exact price drop percentage that will trigger a message—whether it’s 10%, 25%, or more. This lets you tailor the threshold to fit your promotion strategy and product margins. The message can be customized and include the product name, a link directly back to the product page, as well as an image of the product.
Example Message:
"Today’s your lucky day: The price of the has dropped! Grab it while it’s still in stock: [link]”
Low Inventory
Notify subscribers when a product they’ve viewed is running low.
Instead of a fixed threshold, you can now set the inventory level that triggers a message. For example, you might alert shoppers when only 5 items remain, or wait until stock drops below 20—it’s completely up to you.
The message can be customized and can include a link directly back to the product page, as well as an image of the product.
Example Message:
“Heads up! 👀 [product name] is almost sold out! Grab yours before it’s gone: [link]”
Back in Stock
Let customers subscribe to be notified when an out-of-stock product—or even a specific variant like size or color—comes back in stock. Include the option for them to fully opt into your marketing texts or if they only receive the one-time Back In Stock notification.

This trigger helps you recover lost sales, capture demand, and keep shoppers engaged with your brand.
How it works:
-
A customer visits a product page and sees an out-of-stock variant.
-
They click “Notify Me via SMS.”
-
They enter their phone number (and/or email) and receive a confirmation.
-
When the item is restocked, TapOnIt automatically sends them a notification.
-
The subscriber clicks through and completes the purchase.
Last Purchase Date
It’s been a while since your customer purchased from you… Maybe it’s time to remind them of what they’re missing. Turn on the ‘Last Purchase Date’ trigger to send out automated messages when a customer is a designated amount of time away from their last purchase date. You can even offer them a unique discount code for returning.
Example Message:
“We miss you! ❤️ It’s been a while—come see what’s new & enjoy 15% off your next order. Use code WELCOME15 👉 [link]”
Number of Orders
It can be nice to thank and even reward your loyal customers. With the ‘Number of Orders’ trigger turned on, set a minimum number of orders for a customer to make, and your account will automatically send a message when they reach that number.
Example Message:
“🎉 Wow, [Name]—this is your 5th order with us! We’re so grateful for you ❤️ Enjoy 20% off your next one with code THANKYOU20 👉 [link]”
Total Spent
Your store has been around for a while, and some of your customers have racked up quite the tab – it’s time to recognize them for that hard work. Use the ‘Total Spent’ trigger to acknowledge customers who have spent at least a minimum amount with your store.
Example Message:
“You’ve officially joined our VIP club 😍 Thanks for spending $1,000+ with us! Here’s 25% off your next order to celebrate: [link]
Shipping Notifications
To use shipping and delivery triggers, your Shopify store must be connected to a tracking tool (like AfterShip, ShipStation, or UPS) that sends order status updates back to Shopify.
Your Order Has Shipped:
Let your customers know when their order has left your warehouse. Include a link with their tracking information.
Example Message:
"Your order has shipped. Track it here: [tracking link]"
Your Order Has Been Delivered
Beware of porch pirates! Let your customers know when their order has been delivered.
Trigger Controls
Along with choosing which triggers to use, you now have more control over who receives messages and how often. These settings help you keep campaigns relevant while avoiding notification fatigue.
-
Inclusion Rules
Choose which subscribers are eligible to receive a trigger. For example, you can limit Price Drop or Low Inventory alerts to people who have recently viewed or interacted with the product. -
Exclusion Rules
Exclude subscribers who don’t need another message. For instance, if someone purchased the product in the last 30 days, you can prevent them from receiving additional alerts about it. -
Message Limits
Control how frequently subscribers get trigger-based texts. You can set:-
The maximum number of messages per trigger within a timeframe.
-
Limits on how many times someone can receive messages about the same product.
-
A cooldown period between messages.
-
These controls give you fine-tuned flexibility to make sure subscribers only get the right message, at the right time.
